I'm wondering what experience/information anyone has about renting an rv for burning man? I'm considering renting one, but got quotes that seemed high. $3,000-4,000 for seven days. Does this sound about right? Is it worth it for two people? What are some other options to avoiding sand in your tent when a sandstorm hits? Thanks!

Re: Renting an rv for burning man?
Mon, April 12, 2010 - 7:44 PMI'm shocked that there's any available, so no that doesn't sound high. As the event draws nearer, they aren't to be found for pretty much ANY price. (Next-year Cruise America reservations are apparently made on the way home from Burning Man, if you want a chance of getting one, ha ha).
Some options to avoid dust in your tent (there's no sand on the playa): none. You can LESSEN the dust in your tent by getting a tent that isn't made entirely of mesh (use the rainfly also). Use a shade structure over your tent....one with sides is awesome. Put a big sheet entirely over your bed before you leave your tent in the morning, pull it back at night to reveal a clean bed. Secure your stuff in plastic bins with lids.
Burning Man has dust. Deal with it. Embrace it. It's not that bad if you take some basic measures (as listed above). -

Tue, April 13, 2010 - 6:02 AMFor the record;
We were going to rent an rv for BM06, saw the prices, and bought one for $3,200. I know this won't work for everyone, but it sure did for us. Still have it, still use it. -

Re: Renting an rv for burning man?
Tue, April 13, 2010 - 11:26 AMI bought my camper due to rental prices as well. Now I'm selling her. But there is nothing like a camper/rv for the playa. The beauty was being able to sleep into late morning inside an insulated camper on a nice bed!
btw: if you are interested in a classy 1977 21' Airstream Argosy in perfect condition for $6K, let me know. I can set you up. -

Re: Renting an rv for burning man?
Wed, April 14, 2010 - 8:31 AMIt is nice to have an RV on the playa but it's also kind of a bitch. You get all of your stuff there, your food stays much more fresh, the showers are amazing but when you get home to clean it for return don't depend on your camp mates. They will all be ready to decompress and get their shit home.
We were able to find one for around $2000 from a guy who rented out an RV to people to make a little extra cash for himself. It took two of us 6 hours of cleaning and it still was covered in playa. You're never going to get away from the dust. I'd rather just embrace the dust, deal with it for a week and not have to worry about what cleaning it out when I get home. Renting it also has a liability. Maybe consider a moving truck, you could sleep inside it and when you are done just spray it out at the car wash. -

Re: Renting an rv for burning man?
Wed, April 14, 2010 - 4:45 PMWow, I just want to say that for my part, I cleaned my Argosy in one day by myself. I spent about 8 hours on it, but if you walked into it right now, you would hardly believe that it was ever on the playa. The 8 hours of cleaning was SO very worth the extra sleep, the showers, cooking ability and cleanup. OMG!
Guess it's an individual thing. -

Thu, April 15, 2010 - 6:14 AMYeah, Penguin, ours was not a big deal either. I'm always reading about how the dust will always be there, never get 'er clean, blah blah blah. For me, whatever effort is needed to clean the rv is wayyyyy worth the benefits you reap. -

Re: Renting an rv for burning man?
Thu, April 15, 2010 - 7:33 AMI've said it before and I'll say it again:
LEAF BLOWER.
Every time I hit the car wash in Reno after a post-burn night at the Grand Sierra RV Park, the attendant is always amazed that I've even BEEN to Burning Man. -

Fri, April 16, 2010 - 9:19 PMWell, I've not tried leaf blower, but I did buy my little shop vac for the purpose!

Re: Renting an rv for burning man?
Fri, April 23, 2010 - 8:00 AMMy friend rented one a in 2008, when the dust storms were unusually bad (Class A). I had it detailed at the car was when we got back for $300. Well worth it. They asked me afterwards if a fire extinguisher went off in there.
I'd try the classifieds to see if you can find a personal party that rents theirs out.

Re: Renting an rv for burning man?
Fri, April 30, 2010 - 11:18 AM--Sounds about right; pricey for two; a little more reasonable for 3. 4 gets reeeeal crowded.
--Make SURE that the outfit you rent from isn't a 'probationary' dealer; i.e. one that's trying to become authorized for some chain or other; I had a real bad case of bait-and-switch from the one in Santa Rosa (now defunct). If the RV you rent totally sucks don't be shy about bitching and moaning about it; you might be able to exchange it for one in better condition but don't be surprised if it's smaller than the one you wanted: in the fine print they have the right to do that.
--Don't expect to see that deposit again: that's really stacked against you. And if anything breaks, like poo valves (been there, done that), you'll get zero service on Playa and the refund will be about twenty bucks for a whole week of misery.
--For the price of renting an RV for maybe 4 Burns you can BUY a decent used RV; just take your time, do your homework and see what turns up on Craigslist; you might get lucky. Took me 11 months to find the RV of my dreams; it had problems and I had to sink a couple grand into it to make it right, but now, 3 yrs down the line it's (almost) paid for itself in saved excessive rental fees and I'm golden, heh.
--Remember there's an RV Burners Tribe and there's lotsa good advice over there.. -
